Filière quinoa
The EURO-NAT Distribution SA society is one of the founder members of the BIO EQUITABLE association.
It’s in 1989 that for the first time the EURO-NAT manager discovers the Quinoa grain. In 1990, Didier Perreol meets Jean-Marie Galliath, president of the voluntaries association Point d’Appui that works in Bolivia and who knows the virtues of Quinoa. From this day, everything connects, the exchanges are established and the firsts importation in France are concreted. In every phase; from setting the cultures in Bolivia on identified parcels to its routing and its transformation in France, controls are applied to guarantee the conformity and the complete traceability of the organic and fair trade product.
Almost 300 producers are engaged by a contract with JATARIY (EURO-NAT Bolivian subsidiary) to supply the factory in Bolivia. The paid price to the producers is fixated during a reunion with the different communities. It’s about paying the Quinoa production in a higher price than the price of the conventional market in Chalapatas. A price guaranteed without taking on account the market fluctuations, with a minimum threshold. Bonuses are add according to the zone of culture of the grain. Three technicians ensure the permanent link with these producers. A very particular attention is given to the preservation of the environment, fragile under the weather conditions. Action to fight against the erosion of the grounds (trees plantations, specific culture methods, construction of walls, grounds rest between cultures, and so on) are established. Farmers receive training for a sustainable agriculture development.
In this complicated economic and climatic context, the stake consists in developing outlets for the agricultural production of the small exploitations and allow the producers and their families to maintain their activities on the Bolivian Altiplano.
